Sometimes I have trouble coming up with what to blog about. I'm never sure if what I'm writing is interesting or just me talking, so my Dad suggested some of my favorite things about the Phils. It was more difficult than I would have thought, but I think this short list best summarizes why I love the Philippines.
5. I love sun. Growing up in Seattle I didn't see it much, so I have really appreciated the days when the sun is out and shining in the clear blue sky. Mmmm it's impossible to look up and feel that warm sun on my face and not smile, and it's even better when the wind has picked up! Not to mention my skin looks less "casperish" now that it has little color to it.
4. I love the ministry opportunities that this country has. Christianity is growing, and people are searching for the truth. The people of Manila are searching for what is truth, and what is ultimately good. I love living in a country where I'm not afraid to share the gospel to a people group who is desperately seeking.
3. I love the beaches. It is unbelievable how beautiful some of these beaches are. Gorgeous views, pure sand, and warm crystal water! Anytime I am able to escape for the occasional long weekend I count myself extremely lucky! I am so blessed that the Lord has called me here, makes up for all those "cultural experiences".
2. I love the markets. The little doo dads that you find, anything and everything is for sale. I once asked a guy if he knew where I could find a hammock and he said he didn't have any right then, but if I waited two minutes he would run home and grab his for me. I told him I couldn't possibly take his hammock and I'd continue to search. Haha But I love all the different crafts they make, along with all the delicious fruits they sell.
1. The thing I love the most about the Philippines...the people. They almost always have a smile on their faces. My friends tease me, but one of my favorite parts of the day is when I'm leaving or coming to school and the guards look up with a big smile on their face and wave a good day to me! The campus' head gaurd, Sergeant Ed, always welcomes me personally, and the workers at my condominium all know me by name. A couple weeks ago one of the maintainance guys noticed that my plant outside my condo was dead, and he told me he had something perfect for my pot. So the next day I came home and he had planted a fresh new green plant. It was so sweet! I don't remember a time in the States where I was ever treated so kindly. Makes my think about how good I feel when these guys smile at me, maybe I should make more of an intentional effort to smile at others.
